چکیده
Serpentinization reactions produce highly reduced waters that have hyperalkaline pH and can high concentrations of H 2 CH 4 . Putatively autotrophic methanogenic archaea been identified in the subsurface Samail Ophiolite, Sultanate Oman, though strategies to overcome dissolved inorganic carbon limitation remain be fully understood. Here, we recovered metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs) applied a metapangenomic approach three different Methanobacterium populations assess habitat-specific functional gene distribution. A Type I population was fluids with neutral pH, while II “Mixed” were most (pH 11.63). The core genome all highlighted potential DNA scavenging techniques phosphate or nitrogen induced by environmental conditions. With particular emphasis on Mixed found fluids, accessory unique each reflected adaptation mechanisms suggesting lifestyles minimize niche overlap. In addition previously reported metabolic capability utilize formate as an electron donor generate intracellular CO , possessed genes relevant defense against antimicrobials assimilating osmoprotectants provide cellular stability. enriched for multiple glycosyltransferases energetic costs adhering mineral surfaces other microorganisms, fostering non-motile lifestyle. These results highlight differentiation distinct circumvent challenges serpentinization impacted through coexistence strategies, supporting our ability understand controls adaptations within serpentinizing Ophiolite.

Geological and Geochemical Controls on Subsurface Microbial Life in the Samail Ophiolite, Oman
Microbial abundance and diversity in deep subsurface environments is dependent upon the availability of energy and carbon. However, supplies of oxidants and reductants capable of sustaining life within mafic and ultramafic continental aquifers undergoing low-temperature water-rock reaction are relatively unknown. We conducted an extensive analysis of the geochemistry and microbial communities r...
متن کاملFossils of hydrothermal vent worms from cretaceous sulfide ores of the samail ophiolite, oman.
Fossil worm tubes of Cretaceous age preserved in the Bayda massive sulfide deposit of the Samail ophiolite, Oman, are apparently the first documented examples of fossils embedded in massive sulfide deposits from the geologic record. The geologic setting of the Bayda deposit and the distinctive mineralogic and textural features of the fossiliferous samples suggest that the Bayda sulfide deposit ...
متن کاملCoexisting serpentine and quartz from carbonate-bearing serpentinized peridotite in the Samail Ophiolite, Oman
Tectonically exposed mantle peridotite in the Oman Ophiolite is variably serpentinized and carbonated. Networks of young carbonate veins are prevalent in highly serpentinized peridotite, particularly near low-temperature alkaline springs emanating from the peridotite. An unusual feature in some samples is the coexistence of serpentine and quartz, which is not commonly observed in serpentinites....
متن کاملMethane Dynamics in a Tropical Serpentinizing Environment: The Santa Elena Ophiolite, Costa Rica
Uplifted ultramafic rocks represent an important vector for the transfer of carbon and reducing power from the deep subsurface into the biosphere and potentially support microbial life through serpentinization. This process has a strong influence upon the production of hydrogen and methane, which can be subsequently consumed by microbial communities. The Santa Elena Ophiolite (SEO) on the north...
متن کاملCommunity Structure in Methanogenic Enrichments Provides Insight into Syntrophic Interactions in Hydrocarbon-Impacted Environments
The methanogenic biodegradation of crude oil involves the conversion of hydrocarbons to methanogenic substrates by syntrophic bacteria and subsequent methane production by methanogens. Assessing the metabolic roles played by various microbial species in syntrophic communities remains a challenge, but such information has important implications for bioremediation and microbial enhanced energy re...
